Use of melatonin is non-formulary in adults and in all indications in children other than sleep disorders as detailed in DPC Shared Care Guidance.

Due to lack of evidence for efficacy, safety and cost effectiveness melatonin treatment is not recommended for treatment of insomnia in adults (DPC Oct 2008) and for treatment of sleep disorders in patients with dementia/Alzheimers (DPC Aug 2017).
